Currently a de facto standard, SSL is a commonly used protocol for managing the security of data transmission by ensuring a secure connection between your web browser and the web server. SSL utilises the public-and-private encryption system, as well as digital certificates. Data that passes back and forth between the web browser and the web server are encrypted to prevent unauthorised users from hacking into these data and information at the middle of these two transmission points.

Once in a secured web site, the Microsoft Internet Explorer browser displays a closed-lock at the bottom of the browser's status bar, whilst the Netscape Navigator browser displays a key symbol.

A general and common security that is widely used nowadays. Valid users of SJAM-iassist must provide a valid User ID and password before they are allowed to use the web system. The passwords are encrypted by the system to ensure the security of every user. This basic level of security only allows the users to perform and use non-critical services that are provided by the system, such as viewing of research materials.

The password is encrypted throughout the entire system, and never decrypted at any point. This helps to increase the security of the passwords from being known to unauthorised users. SJAM uses a proprietary algorithm to encrypt passwords.

A second level of security is adopted in SJAM-iassist which requires approved and valid customers to provide a PIN Number when accessing strictly protected areas of the web system, especially when viewing reports and performing transactions.

The PIN Numbers are also encrypted, similarly to the passwords.

User's Access rights checking are built into the web pages and checked by the server before serving the page's contents to a user. Different types of users of the system are only granted access to the web pages they are allowed to view. For example, members are only allowed access to the basic services such as Research, whereas clients are facilitated with more services such as viewing reports and performing transactions. Unauthorised users are not able to view web pages and materials of the site that are not granted to them.
